Program Overview and Goal:
Participants will have the opportunity to explore personal experiences, reactions, and resistance towards serious illness, suffering and death. Topics to be covered include presenting bad news to patients, exploring their definition of quality of life, advance directives and DNRs, recommendations for palliative and hospice care, and patient autonomy in making end of life decisions.
The goal of this activity is to present the issues associated with death and dying and increase the practitioner's level of comfort in providing complete care and support for patients and families that are facing end-of-life decisions.
Upon completion of this activity, the learner should be able to:
- Identify measures for initiating conversations regarding end-of-life matters
- Discuss the problems that healthcare practitioners face in addressing these issues with their patients
- Discuss definitions and descriptions of end-of-life healthcare language and factors that must be communicated to patient
- Discuss cultural and spiritual influences on healthcare professional, patients, and families
Criteria for Successful Completion of Continuing Education Program:
To receive continuing nursing education credit, view the audio-slide show, take the multiple choice post test, and complete the evaluation online. Upon successful completion of the post test and evaluation, you will be able to print your continuing nursing education credit certificate. A passing grade of 70% is required.
